Why do people hike?

1. Dec 2025

“Ahhh, what a boring question!” You might think. If so, please feel free and close this blog entry, you might find something more interesting the next time around. Let me start with why I hike: I am not sure! Perhaps I have to start with the fact that I love to hike but at the … More Why do people hike?

Better safe than sorry…

11. Aug 2025

I am back in Berlin… since the 1st of August… until I fly to Japan on the 31st of August. Why? That my plans would be in constant flux was a given from the beginning; I was just surprised how fast that would happen. I was on my fifth day of hiking the Kungsleden and … More Better safe than sorry…

Overwhelmed by Nature – and suspension bridges.

30. Jul 2025

I have been told, that nature above the arctic circle is breathtaking but I had no idea how much so. The first couple of kilometers it felt just nice, a hike like nearly any other in a more wooded area. But the further I came the more breathtaking were the views. What I am going … More Overwhelmed by Nature – and suspension bridges.

Seven Days Disconnected

29. Jul 2025

When I publish this I will have been offline for a whole week. No reception whatsoever between Abisko and Vakkotavare . Only my satellite GPS communicator was able to let people know where I am if they have the link or if I used some of my very precious free messages per month that are … More Seven Days Disconnected

Are Swedish Trains as bad as Germans?

22. Jul 2025

Sweden is pretty. People are nice and helpful and completely understand when you do not understand a single word, at least when you are listening to them. When I reached the platform from which my night train was supposed to leave, it was already very busy. Many backpacks with many people ready to be taken … More Are Swedish Trains as bad as Germans?

And now something completely different…

30. Dec 2024

For more than twenty years I have been dreaming of taking a year off and traveling the world. Whenever I attempted to do so something just was not right or I got that one job offer I could not resist, never mind that I had applied for it in the first place. Let’s not talk … More And now something completely different…

First New Zealand picture dump. Been travelling, watching the Christmas parade in Auckland, learnt that the aggressively short green phase at traffic lights has a system, hiked, slept in my tent and huts, crossed a few of my „favourite“ kind of bridges. Fell in love with New Zealands nature, but not the Weka. Learn a lot about my tolerance for being extra careful and extremely slow when going downhill, and still out of breath (and slow) when going uphill. Love the decision to call my trip from here on „Trail & Travel“ because that makes more sense to me. Hiking for 3 month and in the end not having seen anything else but the trail would be a waste of time and money :) #newzealand #teararoatrail #sabbatical #biohazard #cleanerthanclean #nara #sabbatical #relax #overtourism #overtourismjapan The Japanese version of the Tardis 🤣! https://www.instagram.com/p/DPLQ7rDEj02/ #gönndirwas #michinoku #sabbatical #michinoku #運 #津波 #hope First day of hiking a little bit of rain but otherwise overcast. Still hot though. First impressions #backinjapan #toiletpaperfrenzy #romanticwalktothestation
